British Geological Survey (BGS) Sampling Survey 2001/2: Hebrides Shelf, Rockall Trough and Rockall Bank. (6/Aug/2001 to 20/Aug/2001

This British Geological Survey (BGS) marine sampling survey took place in August 2001 in the area of the Hebrides Shelf, Rockall Trough and Rockall Bank on board the RRS James Clark Ross. The aims were: 1) to acquire samples of metamorphic basement in order to identify and characterise the different Pre Cambrian terrains west of Scotland, 2) to acquire samples of igneous rocks for inorganic geochemical and isotopic analysis and age dating in order to elucidate the temporal, spatial and evolutionary development of UK Atlantic volcanic continental margin and 3) to acquire other sedimentary cores, in the vicinity of the Hebrides Terrace Seamount, mainly to study slope processes. The BGS rockdrill was used to collect hard rock cores. The BGS vibrocore and gravity core were used to collect soft sediment cores. Technical details of the survey are contained in BGS reports IR/02/049 and CR/01/230.英国地质调查局（British Geological Survey, BGS）于2001年8月搭载RRS詹姆斯·克拉克·罗斯号（RRS James Clark Ross），在赫布里底陆架（Hebrides Shelf）、罗卡尔海槽（Rockall Trough）及罗卡尔海台（Rockall Bank）海域开展海洋采样调查。本次调查的目标如下：1. 采集变质基底样品，以识别并表征苏格兰西侧的各类前寒武纪（Pre Cambrian）地体；2. 采集火成岩样品，用于无机地球化学与同位素分析及定年，以阐明英国大西洋火山型大陆边缘的时间、空间分布与演化发育历程；3. 在赫布里底台地海山（Hebrides Terrace Seamount）附近采集其他沉积岩芯，主要用于研究斜坡作用过程。本次调查使用BGS岩芯钻机采集硬质岩芯，采用BGS振动取芯器与重力取芯器采集软沉积岩芯。本次调查的技术细节详见BGS报告IR/02/049与CR/01/230。
