ABSTRACT Background: Shame linked to autobiographical memories is associated with distress and self-criticism. Brief compassion-focussed imagery may help people relate to these memories with more warmth, balance, and calmness. Methods: In a single-session, within-participant pre-post mixed methods study, 57 university students completed baseline questionnaires on depressive symptoms, shame-proneness, trait self-compassion, and recalled parenting. Participants identified a personally shameful memory. They rated shame-related appraisals (including self-blame) and current affect before and after a brief guided compassion-focussed imagery induction, which was followed by a second guided exercise inviting a compassionate perspective on the shameful memory. Participants also completed brief ratings of how the imagery was experienced, provided immediate audio-recorded reflections, and generated solutions about what could have reduced their distress at the time of the event. Results: After the exercise, participants reported substantial immediate reductions in the shamefulness of the memory, self-blame, and negative affect, alongside increased positive affect. Higher depressive symptoms were associated with lower perceived ability to engage in the initial compassion imagery, but did not preclude improvements. Greater overall cognitive–affective improvement was modestly associated with generating more problem-solving ideas. Qualitative feedback indicated that the most helpful experiences involved decentring from harsh thoughts, reappraising responsibility, a sense of shared suffering, and imagery of comforting support; common difficulties included avoidance of the memory and resistance to self-kindness. Conclusions: A brief compassion-focussed imagery and perspective-taking exercise can rapidly shift shame-related appraisals and affect when applied to shameful autobiographical memories. Controlled studies with follow-up and clinically relevant samples are needed to test durability, specificity, and mechanisms.
