By combining the efficiency of lean combustion with the high specific power output of stoichiometric combustion, the spark-ignited hydrogen combustion engine can replace gasoline and diesel engines, decarbonizing conventional power trains.To exploit the full potential of the hydrogen engine and address its broad operating range with changing non-linear behavior, we propose a hybrid approach that combines the proven advantages of conventional control algorithms for stoichiometric operation with those of optimal control for lean operation. For this, a governor controls switching between the conventional and the optimal control based on the requested engine load and the state of the air path. Simulation studies promise a fuel reduction of up to 9 % compared to conventional control. An experimental validation on public German roads with a passenger car demonstrates the viability of such hybrid control for real-world driving.
