The microbial community composition of dolphins and sea lions was characterized using a 16S rRNA gene-based survey of oral, gastric, rectal, and respiratory samples. A follow-up study used genome-resolved metagenomics to characterize novel microbial and functional diversity present in the dolphin mouth.
