The complex composition of parasite excretory/secretory proteins confounds the ability to identify those related to virulence and hence the success of an infection. Comparative analysis between ecologically diverse species may help prioritize proteins that play essential roles in parasitism for functional studies and may contribute to our understanding of the molecular basis of host-parasite specificity. The orthology analysis allowed to re-analyze all collected data simultaneously with the same tool, and resulted in a sequence-based clustering, independently of their initial annotation, reported in individual papers. We used the tool OrthoFinder (Emms DM, Kelly S. OrthoFinder: solving fundamental biases in whole genome comparisons dramatically improves orthogroup inference accuracy.
