As a typical inland saline lake in northwestern China, Lake Ebinur experiences significant seasonal fluctuations in its marginal zones due to repeated freeze–thaw cycles and variations in water supply. Situated in a highly saline environment with intense evaporation, Lake Ebinur undergoes substantial water-level fluctuations, which modify the processes of biogeomorphic succession. This has inevitably disturbed the ecological balance of carbon and nitrogen in the lake’s soils. Given the arid climate, quantitative elaboration of the carbon and nitrogen dynamics of this saline LW is urgently needed, not only for filling local-scale knowledge gaps but also for supporting GHG modelling at regional and global scales.
