Since the early 1970s the European Commission´s Standard & Special Eurobarometer are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries. Principal investigators are the Directorate-General Communication and on occasion other departments of the European Commission or the European Parliament. Over time, candidate and accession countries were included in the Standard Eurobarometer Series. Selected questions or modules may not have been surveyed in each sample. Please consult the basic questionnaire for more information on country filter instructions or other questionnaire routing filters. In this study the following modules are included: 1. European Parliament Spring Survey, 2. Sport and physical activity, 3. Key challenges of our times – the EU in 2022.<br>Topics: 1. European Parliament Spring Survey: frequency of following news on EU politics; image of the European Parliament; prioritized values to be defended by the European Parliament; preferred issues to be a main priority of the European Parliament; desire for additional information on the activities of the European Parliament regarding selected topics; EU image; assessment of the own country’s membership in the EU as a good thing; personal importance of the own country being a member state of the EU (scale); things that bring citizens of different EU member states together are more important than things that separate; current emotional status; confidence that personal life remains unchanged despite the war in Ukraine; intensity of following the news regarding the war in Ukraine; personal readiness to face the following consequences of the sanctions against Russia with regard to: rise of energy prices, rise in food prices; consequences of the war on personal standard of living: is already reduced, is not yet reduced but is expected to do so, no impact expected; preferred statement (scale): defence of common European values must be a priority even if this impacts prices and the cost of living vs maintaining prices and cost of living must be a priority even if this affects the defence of common European values; image of the following countries or group of countries: China, Russia, USA, Turkey, India, United Kingdom; attitude towards speeding up EU enlargement in the view of the Russian invasion of Ukraine; most effective ways of political participation in the EU; importance to vote in European and in national elections; likelihood to vote in the next European Parliament elections; optimism about the future of the EU. 2. Sport and physical activity: frequency of sport activities; frequency of physical activities for non-sport reasons; number of days with vigorous physical activity in the last week; average time spent on these activities; number of days with moderate physical activity in the last week; average time spent on these activities; frequency of walking at least ten minutes at a time in the last week; average time of walking; time spent sitting on a usual day; place where engaging in sport or in other physical activities; reasons for engaging in sport or other physical activities; impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on personal behaviour: no more physical activity, continuing physical activity but less frequently, physically active at the same level as before, physically active more frequently, plans to be more physically active after the pandemic; approval of selected statements regarding physical activity: respondent’s residential area offers many opportunities, local sports clubs or other providers offer many opportunities, local authority does not do enough for citizens; main reasons that prevent from practising sport regularly; membership in the following kind of clubs where participating in sport or recreational physical activity: health or fitness centre, sports club, socio-cultural club; importance of the impact of personal physical activity on the environment; awareness of the following actions taken by own sports club with regard to sustainability: promoting the use of green energy, promoting measures to increase energy efficiency, promoting sustainable transportation, serving food and catering taking into account sustainability criteria, working in reducing waste or improving waste management, none; awareness of measures to support gender equality taken by own sports club; point of contact in case of gender discrimination in own sports club: someone in the management or other person of trust within the club, club has a single contact point for gender‐related concerns, no idea whom to contact internally; attitude towards selected statements about gender equality in sport: female role models among officials or athletes are inspiring more women to follow their example, respondent evenly likes to follow female sport in the media as male sport, gender based violence in sport deserves more attention; personal engagement in voluntary work to support sporting activities. 3. Key challenges of our times – the EU in 2022: importance of each of the following challenges to internal security of the EU: terrorism, organised crime, natural and man-made disasters, cybercrime, war in the EU, protection of EU’s external borders; preference for national or for joint action on EU level with regard to: defending EU territory, carrying out humanitarian missions in Europe, repatriating EU citizens in conflict areas, taking part in UN peacekeeping missions, tackling a refugee crisis in Europe, facing a major pandemic; satisfaction with the response to the Russian invasion in Ukraine by: national government, European Union; attitude towards the following actions with regard to the Russian invasion in Ukraine: imposing economic sanctions on Russian government / companies / individuals, banning state-owned Russian media from broadcasting in the EU, financing supply and delivery of military equipment to Ukraine, providing humanitarian support to the people affected by the war, welcoming in the EU refugees from Ukraine; most feared consequences of the war in Ukraine; attitude towards selected statements on the war in Ukraine: invasion is a threat to security of the EU, invasion is a threat to security of the own country, by standing against the invasion the EU is defending European values, co-operation in defence matters at EU level should be increased, more money should be spent on defence in the EU, EU should reduce its dependency on Russian sources of energy as soon as possible; attitude towards the following statements: EU’s voice counts in the world, own country should help refugees; fields of action to be prioritized by the EU in 2022; importance of each of the following issues with regard to the EU: increase cyber-security, forge strong and reliable international partnerships for stability / security / prosperity, make Europe the world´s first climate-neutral continent by 2050, invest worldwide in digital, transport and energy networks and in partnerships with other countries; embodiment of selected values by the EU compared to other countries: respect for nature and the environment, social equality and solidarity, peace, progress and innovation, freedom of opinion, tolerance and openness, respect for history, support to countries outside the EU facing difficulties; preferred level (EU – national; scale) to deal with the following areas most efficiently: migration and refugees, fighting terrorism, employment and social protection, energy policy, environment and climate change, consumer protection, economy and growth, agriculture and fisheries, foreign policy, security and defence policy, health, digital transformation of economy and society; attitude towards selected statements with regard to the impact of tackling climate change: can create new opportunities for innovation / investment / jobs, can help improve personal health and well-being, can harm the economy, can help reduce costs of greater ecological damage in the future, EU´s energy policy can contribute to defending EU´s strategic interests, EU should invest massively in renewable energies, reducing imports of oil and gas and investing in renewable energy is important for our overall security, increasing energy efficiency of buildings and transport and goods will make us less dependent from energy producers outside the EU, renewable energy can limit the price for energy consumption in the long run; satisfaction with the handling of the vaccination strategy against COVID-19 by: national government, EU; attitude towards the following issues: common foreign policy of all member states, common defence and security policy. Demography: nationality; age; life satisfaction; frequency of discussions about political matters on national, European, and local level; left-right self-placement; marital status; age at end of education; highest completed level of full time education; sex; occupation; professional position; type of community; household composition and household size; financial difficulties during the last year; internet use (at home, at work, at school); self-reported belonging to the working class, the middle class or the upper class of society; own voice counts in the own country and in the EU; own country’s voice counts in the EU; general direction things are going in: own country, EU, personal life; expectations regarding the life of future generations in the EU; satisfaction with democracy in the own country and in the EU. Additionally coded was: respondent ID; country; mode of interview; date of interview; time of the beginning of the interview; duration of the interview; number of persons present during the interview; respondent cooperation; size of locality; language of the interview; region; weighting factor.
