A ZNIEFF is defined by the scientific identification of a sector of the national territory (land, river or sea) of particular ecological interest. All these sectors constitute an inventory of exceptional or representative natural areas. Type I areas, areas with a generally limited area, are characterised by the presence of species, associations of species or habitats, rare, remarkable, or characteristics of the national or regional natural heritage. These areas are particularly sensitive to even limited equipment or transformations.特殊动植物区系自然区域（ZNIEFF）的定义为：对具有特殊生态价值的本国领土（陆地、河流或海域）片区进行科学认定后划定的区域。所有此类片区共同构成了珍稀或典型自然区域的名录。I类区域通常面积有限，其特征为存在珍稀、独特的物种、物种群落或生境，或是具备国家级、区域级自然遗产的属性。此类区域对哪怕是轻度的设施建设或环境改造都极为敏感。
