India as a Gendered State: Implications for the UNSC’s Women, Peace and Security Agenda

In it foreign policy, India portrays itself as a supporter of gender equality and promoter of equal rights for women. At the United Nations, it promotes gender equality and regularly highlight its contribution of female peacekeepers to UN missions. However, within the country, India's commitments to women's rights is inadequate, especially in areas of internal conflict, like Kashmir, Manipur, and Nagaland. The evidence presented in this thesis shows significant violations of women's rights in these areas, and the state is often complicit in them. The thesis tries to understand India's contradictory stand on women's peace and security concerns.
