An analysis of grammatical errors in English in-flight incident reports: a case study of a Thai budget airline

This study was aimed at investigating types of grammatical errors and exploringthe most common type of writing errors found in the in-flight incident reports writtenby Thai senior cabin crew employing error analysis.The participants in this study were 30 senior cabin crew from a Thai budgetairline. The participants have worked as senior cabin crew at the current airlinecompany for over 3 years. The research material in this research was 30 in-flightincident reports composed by the participants. The data analysis utilized errorclassification based on the surface strategy taxonomy. The error frequencies wererepresented as percentages.The findings from the error analysis presented that six types of errors wereidentified in the in-flight incident reports. It was found that the most common type oferror in the reports was omission, which occurs when one or more required linguisticitems that must be in a phrase or sentence are omitted. The analysis of errors in thisstudy is expected to contribute to better teaching methods and self-learning practicesfor Thai EFL/ESL students.
