Thecoronavirusdisease2019pandemicthatbeganinlate2019andcontinuesasofthewritingofthisPerspectiveinsummer2022hasbeenthecauseofbothtremendoustragedy—inliveslostandeconomichardship—andgreattriumphintherapiddevelopmentofeffectivevaccines.Manynationsaroundtheworldhavescrambledtorespondtoaonce-in-a-centuryeventthathasexposedmanyweaknessesinresponseplanningandcapabilities,includingthoseoftheUnitedStates.Evenasthepandemiccontinues,itisnottooearlytoreflectonthemisstepsthathavebeenmadeandlessonsthatcanbelearnedsothattheUnitedStatesandnationsworldwidecanbebetterpreparedforthefuture.Thisvolumecontainsacollectionofessaysthatexplorestopicsofcriticalimportancetowardthataimandidentifiesactionsthatcanbetakentonotonlyimprovepandemicpreparednessbutalsohelppreventtheoccurrenceoffuturepandemics.TheessayscenteronU.S.challengesandexperiences,butthesolutions,inmanycases,requirecollaborativeeffortsthatreachacrossnationalboundaries.
