Adult stem cells and their niches sophisticatedly communicate for tissue maintenance and regeneration. However, beneficially coordinating these complex cell-cell interactions has been challenging. The study shows that the transient dedifferentiation of only a fraction of epithelial stem cell progenies can orchestrate cellular networks in the skin to be favorable for repair. We induced the mosaic and reversible expression of reprogramming factors (Oct-4, Sox2, Klf4, and c-Myc) in mouse skin epidermis.
