Illumina sequencing of the leader-proximal spacer in a phage-encoded CRISPR array was performed to analyze the natural process of interference-driven spacer acquisition during phage infection of Vibrio cholerae. This will enable the mapping of spacer acquisition events to the phage's host genome and specifically to an anti-phage mobile genetic element.
