As small extracellular vesicles (EVs; Exosomes) are explored as a potential adjunct therapy for tendinopathies, MSC derived EVs have been at the forefront of many research studies both in their native and engineered states. One of the primary cell types involved in directing tendon healing and believed to be affected by these EVs is the macrophage. Here we examine the differential effect of EV cell source on primary macrophage RNA expression. The EV cell sources here are native tendon fibroblasts (tenocytes) and adipose derived mesenchymal stromal cells.
