Wild orchids of Monte Sant'Angelo (Naples, Italy): 2022 transect monitoring

Standardised survey of wild orchids (Orchidaceae) in the green areas of the Monte Sant'Angelo university campus (University of Naples Federico II, Naples, Campania, Italy), carried out in 2022 by about 20 trained volunteers of ASNU aps – Associazione Scienze Naturali Unite. The project was funded by a research scholarship of the Department of Biology, University of Naples Federico II, on third-party research funds under the responsibility of Prof. Donato Giovannelli. The campus lawns and flowerbeds were divided into 167 transects (4.9 ha), each surveyed by two volunteers three times in spring (19 April – 11 May 2022) and once in autumn (3–6 October 2022), while ordinary mowing was suspended. Each orchid patch was georeferenced with a smartphone (Input / Mergin Maps app, synchronised with QGIS), and species, number of individuals and phenological stage were recorded. The dataset contains 344 occurrence records (3,956 counted individuals) of 12 taxa identified to species and Serapias spp., and 334 sampling events (167 transects × 2 campaigns, 220 with no orchids recorded). Taxa: Spiranthes spiralis, Serapias parviflora, S. vomeracea, S. lingua, S. bergonii, S. cordigera, Ophrys apifera, O. bombyliflora, O. sphegodes, Neotinea tridentata, Anacamptis cf. coriophora and A. cf. laxiflora.
