Diffusely adherent Escherichia coli (DAEC) are considered sixth diarrheagenic E. coli. However, these are isolated from both patients and healthy people. We found the strains isolated from healthy carrier suppressed cytokine secretion of epithelial cells, while the strains from patients induced the proinflammatory response. The whole genome analysis will provide further information how a subpopulation of DAEC survives in the human gut environment without causing enteritis and how to distinguish diarrheagenic DAEC from non-enteropathogenic organisms.
