The Real-World Worry Dataset (RWWD) captures the emotional responses of UK residents to COVID-19 at a time when the pandemic had impacted every aspect of life in the United Kingdom. Data was collected between 6 and 7 April 2020, when the UK was under a national lockdown (News, 2020) and the number of COVID-19 fatalities was rising steadily. On 6 April 2020, there were 5,373 confirmed deaths from the virus and 51,608 positive test cases in the UK. The day before data collection, the Queen delivered a televised address to the nation. Additionally, it was announced that Prime Minister Boris Johnson had been admitted to the hospital intensive care unit due to COVID-19 symptoms.

RWWD is a ground-truth dataset that employs direct survey methods to collect participants' written records alongside data on the emotions they experienced at the time of writing. As such, this dataset does not rely on third-party annotations, but instead leverages direct self-reported emotional data. Two versions of RWWD are presented, each containing 2,500 English texts that represent participants' authentic emotional responses to the COVID-19 outbreak in the UK:
The Long RWWD consists of unrestricted-length texts, allowing participants to express their feelings freely as they desired. The Short RWWD requires the same cohort of participants to convey their sentiments in Twitter-sized texts. The latter version was developed to facilitate research utilizing Twitter data with this dataset.
