Modeling of Lubrication for Elastic Ring Squeeze Film Dampers Considering Temporal and Convective Inertia Effects Yangpeng Li, Xiaohui Lin, Shuyun Jiang* School of Mechanical Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, 211189, China Abstract:The fluid inertia effect on the behavior of an elastic ring squeeze film damper (ERSFD) becomes significant at high whirl frequencies. However, the existing literature lacks a comprehensive model for the ERSFD concerning the fluid inertia. This study aims to establish a lubrication model for the ERSFD considering the inertia using the average velocity method. The effects of the temporal and convective inertia on the inner oil film force are analyzed under different operating conditions and elastic rings. The results show that temporal and convective inertia should be considered for the ERSFD, especially at large eccentricity ratios or high whirl frequencies; the oil film force of the ERSFD exhibits a unique periodicity due to the action of bosses. This study is the first comprehensive investigation on how temporal and convective inertia affect the performance of the ERSFD.
