Values given are Spearman rank correlations between specific thallus mass (STM) and medullary and cortical secondary compounds expressed as per thallus mass as well as per thallus area of three lichens species and a number of environmental variables measured in the soil and on the host tree (B. pubescens) across gradient of 30 islands differing in size. n = 30 islands. *, ** and *** denotes P = 0.05, 0.01 and 0.001, respectively. Medullary compounds per unit mass never showed a correlation with any environmental variable and are therefore not included.
