Gekko japonicus Genome sequencing and assembly. Gekko japonicus

We obtained a draft G. japonicus genome sequence of 2.55 Gb and annotated 22,487 genes. Comparative genomic analysis revealed specific gene family expansions or reductions that were associated with formation of adhesive setae, nocturnal vision, tail regeneration, and diversification of olfactory sensation. The genome data provide robust genetic evidence of adaptive evolution of reptiles. In this study, we analyzed the whole genome sequences of Gekko japonicus (Schlegel's Japanese Gecko), thus providing valuable insights into the adaptive evolution of geckos as well as the genomic basis of their characteristic traits. Moreover, the genomic resource of geckos is also helpful in understanding the evolutionary history of Lepidosauria.
