This study is based on multi-temporal global 30-meter resolution burned forest area products, global 500-meter resolution forest net primary productivity (NPP) products, global forest fire danger index products and other datasets. It examines the spatial distribution and variation characteristics of global forest fires, as well as the impact of forest fires on forest vegetation productivity during 2000–2018. Taking five regions with frequent global forest fires as typical study areas, this study analyzes and elaborates on forest fire danger from two dimensions: historical status and future trends. During 2000–2018, the global burned forest area ranged from 0.60×10^8 hm² to 0.97×10^8 hm², with large interannual fluctuations. The relatively concentrated distribution areas mainly include central and southern Africa, northern Australia, central and northern South America, among which the burned forest area in Africa accounts for more than 60% of the global total. Forest fires exert a significant impact on forest NPP: in the year of fire occurrence, forest NPP shows a marked decline, and generally gradually recovers over the subsequent three to four years. Among the five global high-frequency forest fire regions, no obvious trend changes are found in forest fire danger in northern Australia and southern Europe. Although forest fire danger remains at a relatively high level in southwestern China, central Africa and the west coast of the United States, it exhibits a slight downward trend.
