This series contains administration files of the Environment Protection Authority, Illawarra Region including licence applications and associated investigations, made by businesses that need to carry out regular scheduled development work or scheduled activities in the Illawarra region as required under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 (Act No. 156 1997). These applications are for businesses who are significant polluters within the local area, where the licence is reviewed on a regular basis, or they can be of major public interest or controversy.From the commencement of this series until 2003 these records were being created by the Environment Protection Authority as it was established by the Protection of the Environment Administration Act, 1991 (Act No 60 1991). The Authority was abolished in 2003 by the Public Sector Employment and Management (Environment and Conservation) Order 2003 and these records continued to be created by the Department of Environment and Conservation. Succeeding agencies have created these records as the function of environmental protection was transferred. The Environment Protection Authority NSW was re-established in February 2012 and this function was returned.
