Calpains participate in the regulation of a variety of functions under physiological and pathological conditions. Among them, calpain-1 is ubiquitously expressed in mammalian cells and has been extensively studied. Calpain-1 knock-out mice are viable and fertile and, at least superficially, appear to be normal. However, they are impaired in theta burst stimulation- (TBS) induced long-term potentiation (LTP) of synaptic transmission in hippocampus and in various forms of learning and memory. We analyzed the brain transcriptome changes of WT and calpain-1 knock-out mice to study the relationship between the observed phenotypic changes related to brain function and changes in transcriptome.
