According to an example aspect of the present invention， there is provided a method for monitoring and controlling of refining of a fibrous pulp， the method comprising: capturing at least one image of a pulp sample; determining amount of all fibres or non-fibrillated fibres in the at least one image; determining amount of fibrillated fibres in the at least one image; determining relation between fibrillated fibres and all fibres or non-fibrillated fibres in the pulp on the basis of the amount of fibrillated fibres and the amount of all fibres or non-fibrillated fibres in the at least one image; generating a control parameter on the basis of the determined relation between fibrillated fibres and all fibres or non-fibrillated fibres in the pulp， and controlling fibre refining by at least one pulp refining device on the basis of the control parameter.
