Amplicon sequencing by Bougouffa et al. 2013 (PMID: 23542623) has indicated a high abundance of Planctomycetes, possibly anammox bacteria, in the interface layer above the Discovery Deep brine pool in the Red Sea. This work further investigates the presence and nature of anammox bacteria at the brine seawater interface through shotgun metagenomic sequencing.
