Compilation of annual nuclear electricity production per reactor from 1954 to 2023

The file “Nuclear_electricity_supplied_per_reactor_per_year_1954_2023” compiles the annual electricity supplied values per nuclear reactor between 1954 and 2023 based on the IAEA PRIS database (IAEA PRIS, 2025). By missing values in the original database, three types of messages are commonly used: “data not provided”, “data from a trial operation not provided” (DTONP), and “data not available – suspended operation” (DNA-SO). To complete the dataset, we estimate annual electricity supplied values for the years where the message “data not provided” is used; for both other messages, we assumed that no electricity was produced. The estimation of supplied electricity uses a mean reference unit power and a mean load factor derived from the values available from the other years, generally directly before or after the missing values (Lassey et al., 2007). By missing load factor, a default value of 0.5 was used.

The file contains a specific column called “DataFlag” where the information about the data origin is available: “O” means that the value is original from the database, “E” means that the value is estimated; further comments about the parameters used for the estimation (i.e., reference unit power and load factor) are available in the column “Comments”. Most of the extrapolated values are for the years before 1970 but the electricity production values for the Ukrainian nuclear reactors in 2022 and 2023 are also estimated in this way.
