Nitrification is an important process in the global nitrogen cycle. Ammonia-oxidizing Archaea (AOA) are carrying out the first step of nitrification. AOA were enriched from the sediment of the mesotrophic freshwater lake Burr Oak in Ohio, USA. The enrichment culture contained the AOA - Nitrosarchaeum sp. BO1 -, an nitrite oxidizer - Nitrospira sp. BO1 - and several heterotrophic bacteria.
