Phylogeography of Ceratopipra rubrocapilla

The Red-headed Manakin (Ceratopipra rubrocapilla) is a widespread understory suboscine bird found in the southern Amazon Rainforest and Atlantic Forest of South America. In this project, we sequenced 70 individuals using reduced-representation sequencing to investigate the phylogeography of this shallowly-differentiated species across its extensive range. In particular, we focused on patterns of population structure and gene flow in the headwaters of the Tapajos and Xingu rivers to evaluate support for the river-refuge hypothesis as a potential explanation for biogeographic patterns in Amazonia.
