Monterey Bay Bloom Simulation Experiments (2008) Metagenome

Simulated blooms, limited by nitrogen and iron, were generated by incubating Monterey Bay surface waters with sub-nutricline waters and inorganic nutrients. Two incubation experiments were conducted using seawater collected off of Monterey Bay, California (in September of 2008. Seawater was incubated for six days in acid-cleaned, seawater-rinsed barrels under ambient light and temperature conditions (achieved by the use of plastic screens and seawater baths) and was mixed several times daily. The whole-community transcriptomic response during mid- and late- bloom conditions was measured along with chlorophyll and other pigments, pH, nitrate, and nitrite.
