Effect of antimicrobial peptides on castrated cattle colonic microbiota

This study investigated the effects of antimicrobial peptides (AP) on the colonic microbiota of Holstein steers using 16S rRNA sequencing technology. The primary objectives were to determine how AP supplementation alters microbial diversity, community composition, and functional potential in the colon, with particular focus on beneficial versus pathogenic bacterial populations. Through comparative analysis between control and AP-treated groups, we identified key microbial shifts associated with improved gut health and growth performance. The findings provide crucial insights into AP as sustainable alternatives to antibiotics, addressing critical issues in animal production and antimicrobial resistance.
