The main survey focus of this Eurobarometer are:
1. Political attitudes and satisfaction,
2. Eating, drinking and smoking habits,
3. Attitudes to environmental pollution,
4. Nuclear energy as well as
5. EC and European unification.
Topics: 1. Eligibility to vote at place of residence; general
contentment with life and satisfaction with democracy; personal
opinion leadership; frequency of political discussions; most important
political goals; postmaterialism; interest in selected forms of sport;
attitude to summer time.
2. Information on eating and drinking habits; detailed information
about eating and drinking behavior at meals the day before; smoking
habits; use of cigarettes; preferred type of cigarettes; age at
starting to smoke; duration of smoking; intended changes of one´s own
smoking habits; changes in weight compared to last year; knowledge
about the European program to combat cancer.
3. Complaints about environmental damages at place of residence;
judgement on the environmental situation in the country; assessment of
the significance of the environmental problem; most important areas of
environmental pollution; most important consequences of environmental
pollution; personal measures for environmental protection already
conducted and intended; assessment of the effectiveness of
environmental protection agencies; preference for economic development
or environmental protection; desire for more information on selected
environmental topics; knowledge about the ´European environment year´;
source of information; interest in the environment year; knowledge and
evaluation of individual actions for the European environment year;
attitude to the environment year (scale).
4. Judgement on the radioactive danger in selected situations;
judgement on nuclear energy problems (scale); personal protective
measures after the nuclear power plant accident in Chernobyl; primary
consequences of the Chernobyl accident for one´s own country;
assessment of the efficiency of protective measures in a nuclear power
plant accident in Western Europe; extent to which informed about
radioactivity in one´s country and trust in this information; reasons
for dissatisfaction with information from this area; most trustworthy
institution with information about radioactivity.
5. Perceived conflict between European and national identity;
knowledge and judgement on the EC Commission; attitude to Western
European unification; attitude to EC membership of the country;
assessment of advantages for the country from EC membership; regret of
a failure of the EC; assessment of advantages and disadvantages from
the realization of the European domestic market in 1992; attitude to
the European domestic market and further integration of Europe;
preferred main focus of a common European policy; attitude to
agricultural policy and recommendations on improvement in European
agricultural policy; expected effects of the EC domestic market on the
job market; effect of the domestic market on business in economically
weak regions; knowledge and judgement on the role of the European
Parliament; intent to participate in a European Election; attitude to
strengthening the European Parliament; attitude to founding a European
Government and political areas for which this government should be
responsible; attitude to a constitution draft by the European
Parliament; attitude to a referendum on a European Union; actual and
desired significance of national and European institutions as well as
organizations.
Demography: self-assessment on a left-right continuum; attitude to
social change; party allegiance; marital status; age at end of
education; party preference (Sunday question); sex; age; size of
household; number of children in household; monthly household income;
occupational position; company size; position in household; occupation
of head of household; city size; degree of urbanization; region.
In Spain and Portugal the following additional question was posed:
behavior at the polls in the past national election.
The following additional questions were posed to women: knowledge
about the forms of medical check-ups for cancer prevention; age at
first medical check-up; frequency of cancer check-ups; medical check-up
with the family doctor, gynecologist or in the hospital.
The following additional questions were also posed in Germany:
knowledge of the presidency of the Federal Republic in the Council of
Ministers as well as assessment of the importance of this presidency;
knowledge about the information office of the state in Brussels.
The following question was also posed in Belgium: language in
household.
Indices: postmaterialism; political orientation; EC support; values
orientation; cognitive and political mobility; unemployment rate of the
region; gross national product per capita in the region.
