Mooring Anchor

This mooring anchor is on display outside the Florida Public Archaeology Network Coordinating Center in Pensacola, Florida. The United States Navy discovered this three-ton anchor in Pensacola Bay in 1965. The anchor was recovered and displayed behind Old Christ Church in Pensacola for many years before it was moved to its current location. During Pensacola's shipping heyday in the late 1800s, mooring anchors like this one were lowered into Pensacola Bay to allow ships to moor (tie up) while waiting to enter the busy port. Paired with another mooring anchor, this anchor was connected to a long, heavy chain that was buoyed on the surface for easy access by ships.
