NRS-16669 | City Railway Progress Photographs

This series consists of albums of black and white photographs, most of which are 21 cm by 16 cm each in size although those in the first album are almost twice this size. The majority of photographs were taken during the construction of the City Railway in order to record progress of the construction work, and the immediate surrounds of the railway . The photographs in this series show the following: general and detailed views of the construction sites, construction workers, equipment, excavation on the sites, clearing operations, demolition, [for example, the Cleveland Street Bridge], formwork, brickwork, steelwork, timberwork, concrete pouring, tunnel digging, plant erection, waterproofing subways walls, erection of the Wynyard and Town Hall underground stations and their interior and exterior with booking offices, ticket barriers, train indicators and escalators to lower platforms, streets and buildings alongside of the railway. Within the albums the photographs are identified by typescript captions pasted on the top each of which includes a precise date. There are some miscellaneous photographs showing special features of work and Darling Harbour reclamation work. Much of the first volume is devoted to photographs of the city in the vicinity of the railway.The images are arranged according to the sections in which the railway was built viz- Section 1: Cleveland Street to Central Station Section 2: Central Station Section 3: Central Station to Museum Section 4: Museum Station Section 5: Museum to St. James Section 6: St James Station Section 7: St James to Circular Quay Section 8: Circular Quay Station (no work done) Section 9: Circular Quay Station to Wynyard Section 10: Wynyard Section 11: Wynyard to Town Hall Section 12: Town Hall Station Section 13: Town Hall to Goulburn StreetCustody History From 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as part of series R236. It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R236 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works.

另有部分杂项照片，记录了特殊施工场景及达令港（Darling Harbour）填海工程作业。
首册大部分内容为铁路沿线周边城市区域的影像资料。
所有影像按照铁路施工的标段进行编排，具体如下：
