RESEARCH BACKGROUND: Curated by Sjraar van Heugten, the former Head of Collections at Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum, the NGV's exhibition VAN GOGH AND THE SEASONS represented the largest collection of Van Gogh artworks to ever travel to Australia. Arranged in four curatorial groupings around the seasons, the exhibition was the first international exhibition devoted to exploring Van Gogh's profound love of nature, a crucial thematic in his oeuvre. RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION: My contribution was as concept developer and scriptwriter on a ten-minute film exploring Van Gogh's life and work. Presented in an immersive, large-scale format in the first room of the exhibition, the film introduced the life of Van Gogh and the profound importance of the seasons to his extraordinary artistic vision. David Stratton (film reviewer and historian) narrated the art-historical content, and the voice of Van Gogh (drawn from the artist's letters) was brought to life by David Wenham (film, theatre and television actor). RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE: The film gave an art-historically accurate but creatively dynamic exploration of Van Gogh, one of art history's most extraordinary and complex figures. The film demanded a high level of scholarship, including an ability to separate myth from reality, as well as an ability to craft dynamic audiovisual storytelling. The content was peer reviewed by NGV Director Tony Ellwood, NGV curators and Sjraar van Heugten, and it was developed in collaboration with an expert team of NGV-based and independent filmmakers, producers, technicians and sound designers. Original footage was shot in Holland and France, and the project's format was technically innovative, comprising a very high-resolution sixteen-screen presentation mode. The film opened the exhibition and had an audience of 462,262 viewers.
