Antarctic Sea Ice Motion and Associated Sea Ice Concentration Changes During Atmospheric Rivers

This repository provides the atmospheric river (AR) detection code, sea ice concentration (SIC) budget analysis code, and Antarctic AR catalog used in our study of Antarctic sea ice dynamics during ARs over 1979–2023. The AR detection algorithm uses 6-hourly ERA5 integrated vapor transport (IVT) data and identifies ARs based on a monthly 98th-percentile IVT threshold, a minimum IVT magnitude of 50 kg m⁻¹ s⁻¹, and a minimum meridional extent of 20°. The resulting AR catalog covers the Antarctic region from 1979 to 2023. The SIC budget code calculates sea ice concentration tendency, advection, divergence, and the thermodynamic residual using satellite-derived sea ice concentration and motion data. These calculations support the assessment of sea ice redistribution and concentration changes under AR conditions. The repository is intended to support the reproducibility of the study and facilitate further research on Antarctic atmospheric rivers and sea ice dynamics.
