Value of cash currency in circulation in Japan 2014-2023

In 2023, the total value of cash currency in circulation in Japan amounted to around 129.4 trillion Japanese yen, declining for the first time in the past decade. The large majority of the Japanese currency in circulation is made up of banknotes issued by the Bank of Japan, while coins accounted for less than four percent of the cash currency.
