Pulp production in the United States 2022, by type

The United States produced approximately 44 million metric tons of chemical pulp in 2022, of which nearly 24 million metric tons was unbleached chemical wood pulp. As opposed to mechanical pulping, which uses mechanical grinding to covert logs or wood chips into paper pulp, the chemical pulping method converts wood chips into pulp for papermaking by combining wood chips with chemical agents. This reaction dissolves and separates lignin from the raw materials. Pulp from non-wood sources, such as bamboo and bagasse, accounted for the smallest share of pulp production in the U.S. In total, the U.S. produced 46.6 million metric tons of pulp for paper in 2022.
