NRS-19787 | Plans of Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum / Gladesville Hospital for the Insane / Gladesville Mental Hospital / Gladesville Hospital

This series consists of 33 plans received from Gladesville Hospital. The Government Architect drawn plans of buildings on the Gladesville Hospital site date from at least 1882 and possibly as early as 1868 when the hospital was known as Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum. The latest plan in the series dates from 1964 by which time the hospital was known as Gladesville Hospital.  The majority of the plans in the series are from the period between 1900 and 1948, when the hospital was known as Gladesville Hospital for the Insane and, post 1914, as Gladesville Mental Hospital. The hospital's name changes are reflected in the titles of the plans.Included in the series are site plans and floor plans, sketches, sections and elevations. Each plan provides details of how the particular site or floor of a particular building is to be used, including notes on layout and fittings.Many of the printed plans have been hand coloured and annotated. Some are backed with fabric and others form part of a set of drawings for a particular area. For example, there are sets of drawings for the female sick and infirm ward and the new refractory block for female patients.The plans have been arranged by date and plan number. Those plans without a plan number have given a number indicated by square brackets in the item list. Please note that square brackets have also been used in some of the titles of the plans where sections of words are missing due to rips and tears.
