Photograph of an exterior view of a sewer maintenance yard, showing three workers in protective masks standing next to the "sewer skiff", ca.1936. A worker wearing a protective mask stands on the pavement at the left of the image, to the left of a boat known as the "sewer skiff". Two workers, also wearing protective masks, stand to the right, at the opposite end of the boat. The "sewer skiff" was used in 1936 to inspect 6 miles of the City's North Outfall Sewer (NOS). The Assistant Superintendent of Sewer Maintenance, Reuben Brown, personally inspected the NOS using this boat. It appears to be made of metal and sits on two wooden sawhorses. On its top, at the near end, are three lights, which are powered by a battery at the far end of the object. A brick building with paned windows runs from the left centerground to the right background, with a tall wooden gate at the left side and an opening framed by a wooden scaffold-type structure at the right. A sign on the gate reads "[City] of Los Angeles [Sewe]r Maintenance Yd. 109-S. Ave. 18. [Dept] of Public Works. [Bu]reau of Engr".
