Waasen/Hanság Hungarian part
Summary The Hanság or Waasen (ger.) is a fen area of about 460 square kilometres south eastern of Lake Neusiedl. The bigger part of this area belongs to Hungary. In former times the Waasen was a part of Lake Neusiedl. It was the oldest and so the most shallow sector of this Endorheic Lake. In the Hungarian part of the Hanság you'll find bog forests and marsh areas. In the south there still exist two near natural alder forests as they were once typical for this area. Both forests are strictly protected and can just be looked at at from the edge of the forest. Drainage measures in the 1960 drained large parts of the wetlands. Anyway, habitat-reconstructions such as close by Bosárkány at the river Rabnitz show, how fast fauna and flora recreate themselves to their original structure.
