We examined of gene expression changes upon Epidermal growth factor (EGF) and palmitic acid (PA) treatment on SZ95 human sebocyte cell line. EGF is a mediator of cell proliferation and differentiation in various types of epithelial cells such as sebocytes. PA is a major component of sebum with inflammatory actions. We performed a meta-analysis to compare the gene expression profile of whole acne tissue samples with that of EGF and EGF+PA treated SZ95 sebocytes and showed that EGF may also induce acne related inflammatory pathways (IL-1 signaling) in sebocytes, which was more pronounced in the presence of PA.
