Horizon Eleven Trial Dataset

The assemblage used in this dataset represents part of the sample excavated from Horizon 11 in 1978 from units 161, 180, 253 and 254 and duplicates identifications otherwise included in the combined Horizon 11 Macro and Micro dataset also preserved in tDAR. All materials were collected either by trowel or by screening through ½ “ mesh. No flotation remains from Horizon 11 are included in this dataset. Trowel excavations were conducted for the Horizon 11 material, which was bagged in 18” by 18” miniblocks or 36” by 36” quadrants. Debris measuring one inch or larger was plotted two-dimensionally within each 2-inch level. Macro-faunal remains were bagged in paper bags or wrapped and boxed depending on durability and preservation. Materials were then washed and dry cleaned in the NU processing lab, again depending on durability. Identification of macro-faunal material was conducted by Neusius using comparative collections belonging to The Northwestern University Archaeology Program, and the Division of American Archaeology, Department of Anthropology, University of Missouri. In 2015 students at Indiana University of Pennsylvania created a digital database from Neusius’ hand written coding sheets under the supervision of Neusius for use in the Eastern Archaic Faunal Working Group Project.
