Citizen Orientations regarding Socio-Political Mediation Structures and the Political System of the Federal Republic (October 1993)

Political orientations, memberships and judgement on contact with
authorities and parties. East-West comparisons.$Topics:

1. Memberships: detailed recording of memberships in clubs,
initiatives, professional associations and parties; trust in
institutions; perceived representation of interests by selected groups,
parties, citizen movements and initiatives as well as classification of
the importance of these organizations.

2. Contact with authorities and judgement on parties: judgement on
authorities and offices as well as judgement on contact with
authorities (scale); most important political goals of the country;
current party preference and party identification; length of party
identification; understanding of democracy (scale); issue ability of
the parties; year of birth and month of birth; employment in the civil
service; living together with a partner; ties to church; behavior at
the polls in the last Federal Parliament election; party preference
(Sunday question); non-voters were asked which party they most likely
would vote for.

3. East-West comparison from the point of view of former citizens of
the GDR: the following questions were also posed to residents of the
GDR before the turning point: preferred West party before the turning
point; party identification; comparative evaluation of possibilities
and situations in the GDR and with current conditions, e.g. in building
or house-hunting, influence on municipal political decisions, the
situation on the job market, travel opportunities, saving, medical
care, participation in decisions at work, free expression of opinion
and influence on politics of the country.
