INP data at Gruvebadet observatory (Ny-Ålesund) by the Dynamic Filter Processing Chamber (DFPC) in the period 2018-2020

This database contains data of Ice Nucleating Particle (INP) atmospheric concentration, in the PM1 and PM10 size range, and of Activated Fraction (AF), i.e., the number of INP scaled over the total aerosol particle concentration in the 0.1-10µm size range. Aerosol sampling was performed at GVB observatory, located in proximity to the village of Ny-Ålesund (78°55’ N, 11°56’ E) on Spitsbergen, Svalbard Islands. Aerosol sampling occurred during six intensive campaigns spanning over three years. Two campaigns were held in 2018, one in spring (from 17 April to 2 May) and one in summer (from 11 to 27 July). Three campaigns were carried out in 2019, one in spring (12-23 April), one in summer (5-20 July) and a longer one in autumn, spanning from 4 October to 24 November. One last campaign occurred in autumn 2020 (15-26 September). In total, 113 samples were collected and analysed, 28 during spring, 33 in summer and 52 during autumn. Aerosol particle samples were collected by two parallel sampling inlet systems, one with a PM1 cut size, the other for PM10. INP were quantified by the Dynamic FIlter Processing Chamber (DFPC) which is described in Santachiara et al. (2010; 10.1016/j.atmosres.2009.08.004) and Rinaldi et al. (2017;10.5194/acp-21-14725-2021). Data on the contribution of four ground types (seawater, sea-ice, land and snow) to each sample are also provided. Ground condition maps were obtained from the National Snow & Ice Data Center (NISDC; https://nsidc.org/, last access: 28 May 2022) Interactive Multisensor Snow and Ice Mapping System (IMS) at a spatial resolution of 4 km. For each backtrajectory endpoint, we identified the corresponding ground type, considering only backtrajectories that travelled at altitudes within the boundary layer height. Combining the information obtained along the whole trajectory allowed estimating the contribution of each ground type to each INP sample.
