Most organisms can experience various levels of hypoxia, and HIF1a has been believed to be the master regulator for responses to hypoxia. However, genes underlying hypoxia tolerance is not known. Here we report that the tumor suppressor gene TSC2 is most likely the master genetic switch for hypoxia tolerance using RNA-seq analysis. This finding has important implications in cancer biology as well as in considerations for therapeutic strategies against cancer.
