This dissertation addresses the need to reduce the cost to hydrogen derived from water electrolysis technologies. In particular, the doctoral studies herein address the reliance of noble-metal electrocatalysts for the anodic water splitting reaction, so that a transition from highly scarce metals such as iridium and ruthenium is also met, as noble-metal abundances cannot facilitate the terawatt scales that are needed to decarbonise the hydrogen industry. From this, earth-abundant alternatives have been explored, characterised and employed in state-of-the-art and newly emerging electrolyser designs that are prototyped to meet the applicability and integration requirements of the technology at industry scale.
