Adaptation in glucose and galactose leads to rapid pre-zygotic barriers in yeast.

The relative contribution of pre- and post-zygotic barriers in speciation processes is not known. This is particularly true for early barriers to gene flow, when populations grow in allopatry. In this project, starting with isogenic yeast populations, we monitor how pre- and post-zygotic barriers develop over time, as these populations adapt to glucose and galactose in allopatry. Genome sequencing of the evolved lines leads to identification of mutations which facilitate barriers to gene flow.
