50 years of Australian film awards data

About the data This dataset describes 50 years of nominees and winners from the AFI/AACTA Awards, the premier annual awards handed out in the Australian film industry. These awards were known as the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards until 2010, and have been the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards since 2011. The awards included are: Best Film (1975-2024) Best Direction (1975-2024) Best Actress in a Leading Role (1975-2024) Best Actor in a Leading Role (1975-2024) Best Actress in a Supporting Role (1976-2024) Best Actor in a Supporting Role (1976-2024) Best Adapted Screenplay (1978-1979, 1983-1987, 1989, 1993-2003, 2005-2006, 2008-2018, 2021) Best Original Screenplay (1978-1979, 1983-1987, 1989, 1993-2006, 2008-2018, 2021) Best Screenplay (1975-1977, 1980-1982, 1990-1992, 2007, 2019-2020, 2022-2024) Best Editing (1976-2024) Best Cinematography (1976-2024) Best Original Music Score (1975-2024) Best Achievement in Sound (1977-2010) Best Sound (2011-2024) Best Production Design (1977-2024) Best Costume Design (1977-2024) The data tables were manually compiled using information from Wikipedia, which were tidied and verified against the information on AACTA's website for the awards. For example, Wikipedia's article for the Best Supporting Actor award lists Reg Lye as a winner in 1975, but the AACTA website identifies this as an "honourable mention" under the Best Actor prize. As a result, the 1975 entry listed in Wikipedia is not included in the dataset here. The dataset was initially put together as part of research related to the Kinomatics Australian Film Production Dataset, but is published separately here as it may be of wider use beyond our interest in it. Data files The data are presented as two tables in comma-separated values files: afi-aacta_awards_1975-2024.csv afi-aacta_awards_films_1975-2024.csv The first table lists the nominees (including the winners) of each award. The second lists the films contained in the first table and the total number of nominations and wins each receives across the awards therein. It also contains two identifiers that can be used to augment the data from external sources: Internet Movie Database (IMDb) IDs for each film, and Wikidata QIDs.
