Why We Got Snakes Wrong (And What That Says About Everything Else)

Snakes predate humans by approximately 100 million years. Selection pressure during primate evolution built dedicated neural hardware for detecting them — a subcortical pathway operating faster than conscious awareness. This essay traces the implications of Lynne Isbell’s Snake Detection Theory beyond its original biological domain, arguing that the same pattern-recognition architecture repurposed from threat detection to symbol-making may underlie much of what we call religion, art, and abstract thought.
