VPRS 15914 Building Specifications, Unregistered Documents

Under the provisions of the Local Government Act, councils were given wide-ranging powers for the making of by-laws to regulate the erection and construction of buildings and such other structures as advertising signs within the municipality. Councils were able to regulate the type of materials used and the manner in which they were used. This led to the development of the system whereby permits had to be obtained and plans and specifications submitted before any works could commence and with the execution of the work monitored by the Council Building Inspector.This series contains building specifications relating to the alteration of, or on occasion, the construction of, hotels, memorial halls, abattoirs, kindergartens, offices, factories and workshops within the City of Richmond. This series does not contain specifications relating to private dwellings.Some of the building specifications have been removed from this series because these have been sentenced for temporary retention under the provisions of Public Record Office Standard 98/01 General Disposal Schedule for Local Government Records.
